No Exam? No Problem
Many lawyers and law students do not wish to take a formal exam at the end of a course of study. Anyone who wishes only to improve his or her English without taking an exam can simply work through this legal English book and test their progress with the revision material available at the end of every training unit. It comes with a full answer key. This book is based on many hours of consultation with working lawyers and will improve the accuracy and confidence of any lawyer who is trying to improve his or her English language skills. We recommend it as a course of self study together with our Advanced Vocabulary series books ‘The Vocabulary of Commercial Contracts’ and ‘The Vocabulary of Employment Law and Contracts’, both available from the Legal Fox website.
What the Author says
‘My name is Catherine Mason and I teach commercial legal English to international lawyers in Cambridge, England. I also write for TOLES.
This legal English book started as a result of teaching English to a group of young commercial lawyers in Frankfurt several years ago. I taught this group using my own lessons that I had developed in Cambridge. The group were delighted that my lessons were based on skills and that I wasn’t using any of the books that they had already seen. In fact, they complained to me that legal English books seemed to be written by people who hadn’t bothered to ask lawyers what they really had to do at work. It seemed there had been no proper communication between the textbook writers and the learners using the books. As far as I can see, this is still the case today with many legal English books.
When I set up my own legal English training centre in partnership with a solicitor the first thing we did was to ask employers of young lawyers what type of legal English we should teach our students. We asked major commercial law firms about where to start when teaching contract drafting or teaching the English necessary for a merger or an acquisition. We spoke to international interns about what they found difficult. We listened to our legal English students in Cambridge, who were ambitious young lawyers from around the world and we developed materials that were a solution to their difficulties.
The result of all of this experience and many years of writing and testing material is ‘The Lawyer’s English Language Coursebook’. This legal English book provides a completely solid foundation of the correct type of English a lawyer needs in order to develop strong and efficient professional skills. It is the correct starting point for most international lawyers who need to have a strong commercial vocabulary and achieve absolute accuracy in all they do.’
The Content of the Book
This excellent legal English book is training material in important legal vocabulary, accurate grammar and style. It contains 10 study units in subjects important to international lawyers, such as understanding commercial contracts and an introduction to finance. Law firms and other employers require accuracy as well as a good knowledge of vocabulary, so the book has a strong focus on correcting grammar mistakes as well as teaching thousands of new legal words. It contains examples of extracts from real documents such as commercial contracts, company formation documents and formal letters.
The 10 units are each divided into Part 1: TOLES FOUNDATION and Part 2: TOLES HIGHER. It is a complete course of study in legal English for the Higher and Foundation exams and contains testing material at the end of each unit. We recommend that students for TOLES Higher also study some supplementary intermediate-advanced grammar.
